The
Upflow Sludge Blanket Filtration (USBF™) process
is the result of over fifty years of research, development, testing and
practical experience. It is a
modification of the conventional activated sludge process that incorporates an
anoxic selector zone and an upflow sludge blanket filtration clarifier, all in
one integrated bioreactor vessel. The
treatment includes not only the efficient reduction of BOD5 and TSS but also
biological nutrient removal (BNR) by the processes of denitrification and
“biological luxury uptake”. The ensuing
compact, modular system takes up significantly less space and contains very few
moving parts. The result is an efficient, highly affordable wastewater
treatment plant with low maintenance and operating costs.
The single reactor vessel design philosophy readily accommodates package plant applications for commercial, subdivision and industrial treatment systems. The simplified, self-regulating USBF process generates a higher quality effluent and accommodates wide flow variations yet require less supervision than other alternatives. Modular units with polyethylene, steel or concrete basins are flexible enough to satisfy every flow scheme.
Small Community Works
Communities can
economically build and operate advanced treatment works using the USBF
design. Frequently existing tanks can
be utilized by inserting the USBF clarifier and associated equipment.
Upgrades
Upgrades of existing plants
are easily accomplished with the USBF.
Modular components can be added or incorporated with existing equipment
to improve capacity and effluent quality.
Water Reuse
The high quality of
effluent of the USBF system can be conditioned for reuse in irrigation,
recharge and industrial uses.
